Why I Document Weddings the Way I Do: A Blend of Editorial & Documentary Storytelling
When you’re planning a wedding, you’ll see photographers describe themselves as documentary or editorial, like you have to choose one box and stay there. But the truth is, I love both. And your wedding day deserves both.
My approach is a blend of documentary realness and editorial intentionality, and each plays a purpose in telling the full story of your wedding day.
Documentary: The Heartbeat of Your Wedding Story
I lean documentary for most of the wedding day because there is nothing more powerful than real moments unfolding naturally.
Documentary photography allows me to capture:
The way your dad exhales right before he walks you down the aisle
The shaky-laughing chaos of your bridal party zipping your dress
Tears in your sister’s eyes during the vows
Or one of my favorites: during a father/daughter dance, capturing your mom’s reaction or the quiet emotions on faces in the crowd
These are the photos that let you feel the day again, not just see it.
It’s the difference between remembering what your wedding looked like and remembering what it felt like.
I want your gallery to be full: full of life, full of emotion, full of tiny in-between moments that slip by too quickly in real time. Those fleeting, unscripted memories are the soul of your story.
Editorial: The Artful, Intentional Moments
While documentary captures the heartbeat, editorial brings the polish.
Editorial moments are:
Bold
Classy
Timeless
Magazine-worthy
They’re the jaw-dropping images that stop you mid-scroll, the ones you want framed on your wall or printed in an album.
Editorial gives your gallery cohesion and elegance. It elevates it, adding sophistication without ever feeling stiff. It’s especially helpful for couples who aren’t super comfortable in front of the camera. With a little direction, posing, and intentionality, I can guide you into photos that feel natural and stunning.
Editorial is also where I get to highlight the details of your day with intention: your florals, the veil, the dress, the venue architecture. These photos honor the pieces you’ve spent months choosing.
How I Balance the Two
At the end of the day, my approach shifts depending on you.
If you’re relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera, I lean more heavily into documentary because your natural interactions already look beautiful and effortless.
If you’re camera-shy or need a little guidance (which is so normal!), I’ll use more editorial posing to help ease you in. From there, the candid moments start flowing naturally — because you feel confident.
Blending these two styles means your gallery isn’t one-note. It’s a full, nuanced, storytelling experience. You get the raw emotion and the stunning artistry. The moments and the magazine shots. The feeling and the beauty.
Your wedding day is layered. Your photos should be too.
